New Initiative for Schools Empowerment & Development paid an advocacy visit to L.E.A Primary School on 28th April, 2022. The School has about 400 young pupils and is located in the community of Zhewun Kokoro, Masaka in Karu local government, Nasarawa state. It was founded in the early 90’s and has served the community till date. It is currently the only public school that serves the community.
During our tour of the School environment, we discovered this school needs certain facilities that will improve good and conducive environment for learning. Among other needs, the following are the most critical.
- Desks and chairs
- Toilet facility and water to keep the toilets clean
- Renovation of dilapidating classrooms
- Construction of a block of classrooms
The pupils are also in dire need of welfare support. Many of them could not afford school uniform, sandals and writing materials. Majority of these young children are from IDP camps.
Due to lack of sufficient desks, pupils have adjusted to sitting on bare dusty floor or in clusters of 5 per desk during classes which without doubt is uncomfortable. This has caused damages to their uniforms/clothing.
From our conversation with some of the teachers, we also gathered that the school has only a pit toilet which has been serving the entire population of the school including teachers for over 10 years! Truly if these facilities are provided, the school will enjoy better environment more conducive for learning. We learnt that the school levy covers school uniforms and exam fee at the rate of #2,500 for each pupil. Unfortunately, most of them still find it difficult to pay.
Of all the identified needs of the school, we would like to seek public support to provide them 100 desks and chairs. A desk and a chair can sit 2 pupils. Therefore, 100 desks and chairs would sit 200 pupils. The estimated cost of one desk and chair is #20,000 (Twenty thousand naira) only
We would like to solicit the support of the indigenes, school alumni, political and social elites, corporate bodies and the general public to be a part of this project. It will go a long way in putting smiles on the faces of these students.
