New Initiative for Schools Empowerment & Development paid an advocacy visit to the L.E.A Primary School on the 24th April 2022. The school has about 264 students and serves the entire community of Pigba Kasa, A suburb of Abuja.
During our visit to the school, we discovered that the school lacks a lot of amenities. From the entrance of the school, there are litters of dirt as the school premises was originally a dump site that the entire community also used for defecation. The absence of fence around the school made the situation worse. Besides the need for a fence around the school, the school’s critical needs are as follows:
- Tables and chairs for both pupils and teachers
- Insufficient classrooms/staff room, as the only classroom block is in a dilapidating state and needs urgent renovation.
- Water and toilet facilities
The young pupils of this school are also in dire need of welfare support as most of them can be seen barefooted while others could not buy school uniform and writing materials.
The situation of insufficient desks, has left these school children sitting on the bare dusty floor during classes and even for exams, this has caused their clothing to wear and tear badly.
After conversations with a few teachers, we gathered that the provision of these facilities and support will help to promote a better environment and education for the pupils. The school levy is said to cover uniform/exam fees and the cost is #2,500 only for each pupil. Unfortunately, a good number of them could not afford it.
Of all the identified needs of the school, we would like to seek public support to provide toilet facility and water for the use of both the students and teachers.
